Could social media help prevent diabetes-related foot ulcers?

Foot ulceration persists as a serious health threat in people with diabetes (PWD), in part due to poor support for self-management. In the latest edition of WPR Journal, researchers from Queen's University describe a collaboration with Wounds Canada to explore the potential of social media in aiding self-management of foot ulcers in PWD. With more than 3.6 billion people using social media and a growing shift towards Telehealth, there are huge possibilities in the area. However, say the article's authors, there are major concerns around the potential for misinformation, and around user privacy. Their work introduces the Diabetic Foot Care Group, an evidence-based model with solid theoretical underpinnings designed to promote access to continuous self-management education and support, and increase the confidence of PWD to engage in foot self-care and prevent diabetic foot ulcers.
