Advocating for safer compression therapy
Friday, 11 April 2025

Wounds Australia submitted a joint letter with our valued affiliate the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) to the Federal Government this week, raising concerns about the current classification of anti-oedema stockings under the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications List.

These garments are presently classified as low-risk and are available without prescription or clinical customisation. This allows individuals to access and use them without appropriate medical oversight, putting patients at potential risk of serious harm.

The ALA initiated the action and, together, we are calling for these items to be reclassified as prescribed medical-grade compression garments to ensure they are only used under the guidance of qualified health professionals.

The submission emphasised:

  • The potential for injury and complications when compression therapy is used inappropriately – especially among older adults and those with complex health needs.
  • The essential role of clinical assessment in the safe and effective prescription of compression garments.
  • The significant burden on the healthcare system caused by preventable issues such as chronic wounds and cellulitis – both of which can often be avoided through appropriate, supervised compression therapy.

Advocating for improved care

Wounds Australia mission is to improve wound care for more Australians and this submission supports that mission, and the goals laid out in our Strategic Plan. We are delighted to be partnering with another sector leader to promote safe, evidence-based care for Australians living with or at risk of lymphoedema.
