Welcoming Michael West to the Wounds Australia Board
Wednesday, 4 December 2024

Today we continue our series of introductions to new Wounds Australia Board Directors and meet Michael West, who shares with us his passion for the fast pace and supportive culture of finance leadership in the healthcare sector.

Who are you and what do you do for a living?

My name is Michael West and I have worked for almost 8 years with Ramsay Healthcare and am currently Director of Finance for three of their Victorian hospitals – Peninsula Private, Beleura Private and Linacre Private. I've enjoyed more than 30 years in the healthcare industry.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The variety of things I get to do, the fast pace, juggling priorities and working with an amazing team of colleagues. For me to have a close knit team you work alongside and support makes going to work worthwhile.

Why did you pursue this field?

I did Accounting and Economics in high school and really enjoyed these subjects. My Dad was an accountant too so I guess it was kind of following in my father's footsteps. Early in my career I had a brief stint in the Investment Banking sector and it was there I decided organisational culture was a very important part of finding where you belong. Working in healthcare for me is a great fit with who I am as a person.

Have you served on a Board before? Why were you attracted to volunteering for Wounds Australia?

I've never served on a board before but when this opportunity came up I was attracted to the fact that as a not-for-profit organisation I could provide my skills and experience as a way of giving back to the community.

What is your proudest achievement – personal or professional?

Apart from my official qualifications I think earning my place as a respected finance professional in healthcare. It's an on-going achievement that keeps developing with new learning and experiences.

How do you spend your spare time?

Travel, music, photography, Theatre and great food. I'm not a cook but enjoy fine dining when I get the chance. I've recently taken up paddle-boarding as I live near the bay.

What do you wish you'd known when starting out?

That there's never the perfect day! There will always be something unexpected that crops up to deal with and it's about having the resilience to be able to quickly adapt and pivot.

Anything you'd like to add?

I'm looking forward to contributing to this wonderful organisation.
